The Pichavaram mangroves lie between the Vellar and Coleroon (Kollidam) estuaries near Chidambaram, a maze of small islands and channels covering about 1,100 hectares. The forest is dominated by Avicennia and Rhizophora trees and is known for its birdlife. Row boats take you deep into the narrow canal tunnels the motor boats cannot reach (about an hour); the shared motor boat runs the wider channels.
