About This Experience

A Village of Sthapathis

Swamimalai sits on the banks of the Kaveri a few kilometres west of Kumbakonam, and for generations it has been home to Sthapathi families — hereditary icon-makers whose craft descends from the bronze tradition that produced the great Chola Nataraja. Karthikeyan Sthapathi's workshop is a working foundry: a modelling room lined with wax figures, a yard of drying clay moulds and a furnace pit blackened by years of pours.

Measuring a Deity

Every icon begins with numbers. Karthikeyan explains the iconometric rules of the Shilpa Shastras, in which the body is measured in units called talam, and shows how a single error of proportion can make an icon unfit for worship. You will see measuring strips, sketches and half-finished wax models of Nataraja, Ganesha and Lakshmi.

Wax and River Clay

This is the lost-wax method, madhuchishta vidhana. You will model a small figure — a Nandi, a lamp or a simple Ganesha — in a wax made of beeswax and kungiliyam resin softened with groundnut oil. Then you coat it in the fine alluvial clay from the Kaveri riverbed, the clay that gives Swamimalai bronzes their crisp detail, followed by coarser layers mixed with sand.

Fire and Finish

When the furnace is fired, you stand back as a mould is heated, the wax runs out and molten bronze is poured into the empty cavity. On other days you watch a fresh casting being broken out of its mould — every mould is destroyed, so every icon is one of a kind. The family then shows you the chasing, weeks of chisel and file work that bring out each eyelid and jewel. Your own wax model joins the family's next pour and can be couriered to you. Swamimalai Bronze Icons are GI-registered, and finished pieces are available at the workshop.

The craft and its maker

Karthikeyan Sthapathi · Sthapathi bronze-casters of the Vishwakarma (Kammalar) community
I belong to a Sthapathi family that has cast icons in Swamimalai for generations, and I began at twelve by cleaning moulds beside my father. Every icon that leaves our workshop is modelled by hand in wax and cast in a mould that must be broken to free it, so no two are ever the same. My proudest moments come when a village temple sends its utsava murthy back to us decades later for cleaning, and I recognise my father's chisel marks on it.

Know before you go

You are a guest in a working home or workshop: looms, kilns and casting pits are someone's livelihood. Expect to sit on the floor or a low stool, and to get your hands dirty with clay, dye or gesso. Prices of finished pieces reflect weeks of work — buying directly from the maker is the best way to support the craft.

What to bring

  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Cotton clothes you don't mind getting clay on
  • Water bottle
  • Clothes you don't mind staining
  • Cash or UPI if you plan to buy
  • A cloth bag or box to carry your piece home
  • Curiosity and patience
Local customs
Ask before photographing the artisan, their family or unfinished designs (some patterns are unique to a family). Do not touch looms, moulds or tools unless invited, and do not bargain hard — a fair price keeps the craft alive.
Accessibility
The foundry floor is uneven and open fire is used during pours; closed shoes are required. Wax modelling is done seated at low benches.
