About This Experience

A Community and a Cloth

Madurai's Saurashtrian community traces its roots to weavers who migrated from the Saurashtra region of Gujarat and flourished in Madurai under the Nayak rulers in the 17th century. They brought a love of resist-dyed cloth with them, and Sungudi — cotton spangled with tiny tie-dyed dots — became one of the city's signature textiles. Jayashree Gopalakrishnan runs a small unit in the lanes near the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, where the Saurashtra language is still heard in the doorways.

Marking and Knotting

The process begins with marking a dot pattern onto plain cotton. Then comes the slow part: each dot is pinched up from the cloth and bound tightly with thread so the dye cannot reach it. A single saree can carry thousands of knots, and the women in Jayashree's unit tie them at astonishing speed. You will learn to pinch, wrap and lock a knot, and tie a simple pattern of your own on a cotton stole.

Into the Dye Bath

In the courtyard you dip your knotted cloth into the dye and learn how colours are layered — light first, darker later, with more knots added between dips for multi-coloured designs. Jayashree talks about the old natural dyes and the fast colours most units use today, and why thorough rinsing matters.

Unknotting the Pattern

The best moment comes last: pulling the threads free to reveal crisp rings of undyed dots across the cloth. You will also see how Sungudi dots are combined with borders and printed motifs on finished sarees. Madurai Sungudi is GI-registered, and the unit's sarees and dupattas are for sale.

The craft and its maker

Jayashree Gopalakrishnan · Saurashtrian (Sourashtra) community of Madurai
Our family has lived in the lanes near the Nayak palace for as long as anyone remembers, and my mother-in-law taught me to tie Sungudi dots — 'a thousand knots before lunch', she used to say. I run a small unit with eight women from our street, and every piece we make is still tied by hand. I am proudest that my daughter now designs new Sungudi patterns that young people in Madurai actually want to wear.

Know before you go

You are a guest in a working home or workshop: looms, kilns and casting pits are someone's livelihood. Expect to sit on the floor or a low stool, and to get your hands dirty with clay, dye or gesso. Prices of finished pieces reflect weeks of work — buying directly from the maker is the best way to support the craft.

What to bring

  • Clothes you don't mind getting dye on
  • Reading glasses if you use them
  • Cash or UPI if you plan to buy
  • Clothes you don't mind staining
  • A cloth bag or box to carry your piece home
  • Curiosity and patience
Local customs
Ask before photographing the artisan, their family or unfinished designs (some patterns are unique to a family). Do not touch looms, moulds or tools unless invited, and do not bargain hard — a fair price keeps the craft alive.
Accessibility
Knotting is done at tables in a first-floor room reached by a short flight of stairs; dyeing is done standing in the courtyard.
